Hedwig Gorski is a first generation Polish American poet, writer, and artist whose poetics were influenced by avant-garde theater while writing for what can be called "guerrilla" and "conceptual theater" when living in Austin, Texas, during the late 1970s after receiving a BFA in painting at the notorious NSCAD. The cut-up script and conceptualized production methods of Booby, Mama! began the popularized slam and spoken word trends. She named her text-based literature performance poetry when publicizing gigs with her band East of Eden to distinguish it from performance art. After a successful career as a performance poet on the independent and college radio circuit, she received a Ph.D. in literature and was a Fulbright scholar at the University of Wroclaw in Poland during 2003-2004.
