It is a comprehensive account of the Oldham Equitable Cooperative Society Limited, one of the earliest and most successful cooperative societies in the United Kingdom. The book covers the history of the society from its inception in 1820 to the end of the nineteenth century, highlighting the key events, people, and policies that shaped its development. The Oldham Equitable Cooperative Society Limited was founded by a group of weavers in the town of Oldham in Lancashire, England. It quickly grew in size and influence, becoming a model for other cooperative societies throughout the country. The society was guided by a set of principles that emphasized mutual aid, democratic decision-making, and the provision of high-quality goods and services at fair prices. The book provides a detailed account of the society's early years, including its struggles to establish itself in the face of opposition from established merchants and manufacturers. It also describes the society's growth and expansion in the mid-nineteenth century, as it opened new stores, developed new products, and established a range of social and educational programs for its members.Walters also examines the challenges faced by the society in the late nineteenth century, as it struggled to adapt to changing economic conditions and new forms of competition. Despite these challenges, the Oldham Equitable Cooperative Society Limited remained a powerful force in the cooperative movement, and its legacy continues to be felt today.Overall, History of the Oldham Equitable Cooperative Society Limited: From 1820 to 1900 is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of the cooperative movement in the United Kingdom, as well as for those interested in the history of Oldham and the broader social and economic history of the nineteenth century. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
