Dell Brand grew up in Sydney and taught in state high schools during her working life, teaching Physical and Health Education. She always had a keen interest in children with reading difficulties and challenging behaviours and much of her teaching life involved working with these students. Her work with a wilderness-enhanced program formed the basis of her PhD. In recent years she has followed her major interest of history. Dell was also a part-time journalist and was published by a number of editors in Australia and abroad. She contributed regularly to four Australian magazines and frequently to newspapers. In her younger years Dell was a keen swimmer and A grade squash player. She now enjoys all outdoor pursuits and tries to play golf regularly. She is married with two grown-up children and five grandchildren and lives on the south coast of New South Wales.
