Hitler And His Collaborators

In this sweeping and meticulously crafted study, historian Paul Davies examines the phenomenon of collaboration not as betrayal alone, but as a complex field of pressures that shaped the behaviour of states, officials, and communities under foreign rule. Moving from the quiet continuity of Vichy to the improvised authority of Quisling, from the radicalised instability of the Independent State of Croatia to the ambiguous autonomy of the Slovak State, the book reveals how collaboration emerged, how it functioned, how it fractured, and how its legacies endured long after liberation.

Structured as twelve interlocking Parts, the book guides the reader through:

• the pre-occupation landscape that made collaboration possible
• the machinery that began to move through routine and administrative habit
• the strain and fragmentation that reshaped authority under pressure
• the post-occupation residues that lingered in institutions and memory
• the historian's confrontation with the limits of the archive and the instability of the concept itself

Rather than offering a single verdict, the book illuminates the contradictions, silences, and ambiguities that define the subject. It shows how collaboration was sustained not only by ideology or coercion, but by the instinct to preserve order, the desire to protect communities, and the momentum of institutions built for continuity.

This is a study of fragility - of how modern states bend, how ordinary routines become instruments of domination, and how societies remember the years in which their own structures were redirected by another power.

For readers of modern European history, political authority, and the moral complexities of wartime governance, this book offers a powerful, unsettling, and deeply human exploration of one of the most difficult terrains in the historical landscape.
