Household Sustainability (Hardcover) (ISBN-13: 9789811296352)

This handbook is designed for researchers, practitioners, and anyone interested in the academic study of household sustainability. It offers a comprehensive overview of cutting-edge research across three major domains: household environmental sustainability, social sustainability, and financial sustainability. Through concise summaries of influential studies and key empirical findings, the book highlights how households adapt, make decisions, and contribute to broader sustainability goals. Whether you are exploring this field for the first time or seeking an up-to-date reference, this handbook provides valuable insights into the evolving landscape of household sustainability research.

Households play a pivotal role in shaping the sustainability of our planet. The choices individuals and families make in their daily lives ripple outward, influencing environmental conditions, social well-being, and economic stability. Yet traditional economic models often emphasize maximizing benefits within a single unit and a single lifecycle, overlooking the needs of other households and future generations. The emerging field of household sustainability addresses this gap by examining how households make decisions that affect environmental quality, social outcomes, and financial resilience - and how they respond to interventions aimed at improving these dimensions. By recognizing the complex interactions among these three pillars, the field seeks to understand how households can enhance their current well-being without compromising the welfare of future generations. Within existing economic frameworks, household sustainability introduces two additional foundational considerations: the importance of long-term growth for descendants and the broader constraints facing human societies.
