""How James Chalmers Saved The Penny Postage Scheme"" is a historical book written by Patrick Chalmers, detailing the efforts of James Chalmers in saving the Penny Postage Scheme. The book is based on a letter written by the Dundee Bankers and Merchants to the Lords of Her Majesty's Treasury in 1890. The Penny Postage Scheme was a revolutionary postal system introduced in the United Kingdom in 1840, which allowed people to send letters at a flat rate of one penny, regardless of the distance. James Chalmers, a Scottish printer and publisher, was one of the key figures behind the scheme. However, after the initial success of the scheme, it faced opposition from various quarters, including the government. James Chalmers continued to fight for the scheme, and his efforts eventually paid off. The book provides a detailed account of the challenges faced by James Chalmers and how he overcame them to ensure the success of the Penny Postage Scheme. It is a fascinating read for anyone interested in the history of postal systems or the role of individuals in effecting change. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
