How Public Utilities Work: A Complete K-12 STEM Curriculum on Energy, Rates, Consumer Rights & Careers (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798995367536)

How Public Utilities Work is a real-world, activity-based workbook for grades 5-12 that explains how electricity, natural gas, and water systems operate, and why utility bills look the way they do. Every household depends on these services, but few people understand how they work, who regulates them, or how rates are set.

Through guided activities, short readings, and practical scenarios, students explore how energy is generated and delivered, how utilities are regulated, how rates are determined, and why bills change from month to month. They also look at how everyday choices affect energy use, cost, and reliability.

Each of the 34 weekly lessons builds on the one before it, moving students past basic definitions and into genuine real-world application. Topics include power generation, grid operations, distribution systems, billing and rate structures, energy efficiency, consumer rights and protections, clean energy, and the public role of utility regulation.

The workbook includes 34 structured lessons with weekly assessments and answer keys, a careers guide profiling 39 in-depth roles across the energy and utility field, sample annotated utility bills, and a complete glossary of key terms. Instructor support provides week-by-week teaching notes and differentiation guidance, and grade-band guidance helps teachers adapt each lesson for younger or older students. The workbook works well for classroom instruction, homeschool use, or independent study.

By the end of the program, students understand not just what utilities do, but how and why the system works the way it does. This practical approach makes complex infrastructure and policy concepts clear, relevant, and genuinely engaging.
