The CDC estimates that one in three women and one in four men will experience sexual assault at some point in their lives. One in three women has suffered sexual trauma. Around 20% of the world's female population has come forward to say they were sexually abused as children.
Dr. Lori Brotto, a psychologist at the University of British Columbia, explains how to heal from trauma. Sexual abuse is the most underreported crime, according to Elizabeth L. Jeglic, PhD. Only one-third of survivors (37 percent) report the crime to the authorities. The news that Bill Cosby was released from prison and other high-profile cases can make survivors feel helpless, hopeless and retraumatized.
