Bo and Jin have waited all year for the festival feast--tables filled with traditional Chinese foods like char siu and dragon beard candy. But when their journey takes unexpected turns, the two hungry ghosts begin to worry they won't arrive in time. As obstacles arise and frustration builds, they must learn to stay patient, support one another, and keep moving forward.
Rooted in cultural authenticity, Hungry Little Ghosts weaves in traditional festival elements such as water lanterns and joss paper offerings, alongside historical clothing inspired by different Chinese eras. The manuscript was refined through a bilingual English-Chinese editorial process to help ensure cultural and linguistic authenticity. With humor and heart, the story explores perseverance, patience, and friendship. Perfect for children ages 4-8.
Jocelyn Wong-Trothen is the author of Hungry Little Ghosts, a children's book writer, and a marketing professional whose storytelling roots began in journalism. She launched her career at the South China Morning Post and Time Out Hong Kong, where she covered culture, lifestyle, and breaking news. Raised in Hong Kong, a vibrant crossroads of East and West, Jocelyn draws inspiration from her multicultural family and heritage. She wrote her first children's book during maternity leave as a joyful side project for her future children--then realized how meaningful it was to share those traditions with others. Today, she writes picture books that introduce young readers to traditional Chinese practices in warm, engaging, and accessible ways.
Erin Hung is an illustrator, muralist, author, and mental health advocate whose work examines the intersections of identity, trauma, and healing. Growing up in post-colonial Hong Kong and later living in cities around the world shaped her belief in creativity as a powerful tool to foster connection and community. She collaborates with schools and nonprofit organizations to facilitate well-being through creative practice, alongside her work in publishing, editorial, and commercial industries. Her select clients include Chronicle Books, Lush Cosmetics, and UNHCR. Erin lives between Hong Kong and London and seeks out nature whenever she can.
