I Promessi Sposi: Or The Betrothed Lovers (1834) (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9780548867648)

I Promessi Sposi, also known as The Betrothed Lovers, is a historical novel written by Alessandro Manzoni and first published in 1834. Set in 17th-century Lombardy during the Spanish occupation, the novel tells the story of two young lovers, Renzo and Lucia, who are prevented from marrying by the machinations of a cruel and powerful nobleman, Don Rodrigo. As they struggle to overcome various obstacles and reunite, they are aided by a host of memorable characters, including the wise and compassionate Father Cristoforo and the bumbling but good-hearted Innominato. In addition to its compelling plot and vivid characters, I Promessi Sposi is also notable for its rich historical detail and its commentary on the social and political issues of its time. Manzoni was a leading figure in the Romantic movement in Italy, and his novel reflects many of the key themes and concerns of that movement, including a fascination with the past, a concern for the plight of the oppressed, and a belief in the power of love and human connection to overcome adversity.Today, I Promessi Sposi is considered a masterpiece of Italian literature and a classic of world literature. It has been translated into numerous languages and adapted for film, television, and the stage, cementing its place in the cultural canon of Italy and beyond. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
