I Was Just a Boy: The Long-Term Effects of Suicide on Surviving Family Members (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781961267367)

This memoir tells the story of a young boy whose father dies by suicide-and the silence that follows.

There are no explanations. No open grief. No safe space to ask why. Instead, there is a quiet, unspoken agreement within the family to move forward without ever confronting what has happened. In that silence, a child is left to make sense of loss on his own.

As he grows, the unanswered questions do not disappear. They evolve. Confusion becomes shame. Grief is delayed, buried beneath expectations of strength and normalcy. The absence of truth begins to shape how he sees himself, how he connects with others, and how he understands the world around him.

This is not just a story about a tragic loss. It is a story about what happens when that loss is never acknowledged.

Through adolescence and into adulthood, the emotional weight of what was never spoken continues to surface-in relationships, in identity, and in the quiet moments where something always feels unresolved. What was hidden does not stay buried. It lingers, influencing decisions, reactions, and the ability to trust, love, and feel fully.

Years later, he begins the difficult process of looking back. With honesty and courage, he examines the family dynamics that shaped his experience, the generational patterns that reinforced silence, and the cost of avoiding the truth. What emerges is a deeper understanding of how trauma is carried, often unconsciously, and how it can be passed from one generation to the next.

Drawing from both personal experience and a deeper exploration of the long-term impact of suicide on surviving family members, this memoir sheds light on the emotional aftermath that is so often overlooked. It speaks to the quiet struggles many people carry-the ones that are never fully acknowledged, but never truly go away.

At its core, this is a story about confronting what was never said.

It is about breaking the silence that kept the truth hidden.

It is about naming the pain that was ignored.

It is about reclaiming a voice that was never given space to exist.

For anyone who has lived with unanswered questions...

For anyone who has felt the weight of unspoken grief...

For anyone who has struggled to understand their place within a complicated family story...

This book offers something many have never received: validation.

It is a reminder that silence does not erase pain-and that healing begins the moment the truth is finally spoken.
