"She was never any trouble."
They meant it kindly. That is what makes it so hard to put down.
You worked out early that being easy was how you got loved. So you read the room before you walked into it. You said yes while some quieter part of you was still forming an opinion. You became the low-maintenance one, the capable one, the one who never made a fuss.
It worked. You are tired now.
Insight has not fixed this, and there is a reason for that.
Women who people-please are usually the most self-aware people in any room. You already know why you do it. Knowing has never once stopped you mid-sentence.
Underneath the pattern is a prediction that runs faster than language: if I disappoint them, something terrible happens. You have believed it your whole life and never tested it, because every yes you did not mean was a way of making sure the test never ran.
This book runs the test.
Written by a licensed marriage and family therapist, this is a twelve-week guided practice built the way the work is actually done in a therapy room. On every page you write down what you think will happen. Then you do one small thing. Then you write down what actually happened, and rate how bad it felt in the moment, and rate how bad it felt an hour later.
By week nine you are looking at page after page in your own handwriting showing you the catastrophe did not come.
Inside:It will not ask you to become blunt or "brutally honest." It will not ask you to confront anyone about the past, or end a relationship, or stop being kind. Your kindness was never the problem. It stopped being a choice.
For the woman who apologizes for taking up a chair in a room she was invited into. For the one who rehearses a text for twenty minutes. For the one everybody calls easy.
You were never any trouble because you were never allowed to be. It turns out being a little bit of trouble is most of what a self is made of.
