Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o is Kenya's most prolific writer. He was born in Limuru (Central Kenya) in 1938 and educated at Makerere University (Uganda) and Leeds University (UK). He is well known internationally as a novelist, a playwright and a literary critic. Ngũgĩ wa Mĩriĩ was born in Rolomo, Limuru in 1951. He was educated in Ngenia Secondary School and, from 1972 to 1974, worked with Kenya Posts and Telecommunications. He took a Diploma in Adult Education at the Institute of Adult Studies, University of Nairobi, and then joined the Institute for Development Studies. Whilst working at the Institute, he became involved with peasants and workers in Community Development at Kamirithu, Limuru.
