Ice, Water, & Wonders: The Adventures of Catelia and Wilfred (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798184692081)

Some friendships are bigger than a mountain. A few are bigger than the sky.

Catelia is an ordinary girl from Milford, New Hampshire, with a grandfather who carves wonders out of wood and a best friend who happens to be a moose. A very large moose. A moose everyone called clumsy, right up until the day a pair of magical spectacles revealed the truth. Wilfred was never clumsy at all. He was only nearsighted. And once he could finally see, he could do something no moose had ever done.

He could fly.

Now Catelia rides on Wilfred's back over the White Mountains, across the islands of Lake Winnipesaukee, and up the windswept slopes of Agiocochook, where the views go on forever. Together they invent Sky Ballet, a dance performed in midair, and tumble from one adventure into the next: a guardian who protects a hidden green valley, a wolf pup lost in a blizzard, lake pirates slipping between two hundred and sixty islands, an eagle who needs saving, and a young dragon still too small to breathe a single spark.

Through every storm and every wonder, one thing holds steady. Far away in the Arizona desert lives a girl named Amelia, a friend who loves to dance the way Catelia loves to fly. The two have never met. But the same stars watch over both of them, and their grandfathers have been trading stories across the miles for years. Distance, it turns out, is no match for a good story. Or a flying moose.

Ice, Water, and Wonders gathers a whole season of tales set among the real towns, lakes, and mountains of New Hampshire, alive with Abenaki place names and the wildlife that roams them. It is a book about courage that doesn't mean the absence of fear, about learning to see clearly, and about a friendship that reaches all the way across a continent.

Written by a grandfather, for a granddaughter. Now it belongs to you too.

For readers ages 8 to 12 who love magic, animals, brave heroines, and stories that feel like a winter night beside a warm fire.
