If Men Were Angels: A Defense of the Republic's Soul (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798258869746)

"In 1787, Hamilton, Madison, and Jay wrote eighty-five essays to persuade a skeptical nation that self-governance was worth the risk. The argument is not over."

Something has shifted in the Republic. Not all at once; never all at once; but in the accumulation of small concessions, eroded norms, and choices made by people who believed the architecture would hold no matter what they did to it. The question Hamilton asked in 1787; whether societies of men are capable of establishing good government from reflection and choice, or are forever destined to depend on accident and force; is no longer a question only for history. It is the question of right now.

If Men Were Angels is a twelve-essay collection written in direct dialogue with the original Federalist Papers; each essay opening with an epigraph from Hamilton, Madison, or Jay, and each one making the case, across 235 years of American experience, that the founding premises still hold. That rights are not conditional. That diplomacy is not weakness. That the statesman and the CEO are not interchangeable. That restraint; the decision not to act, not to strike, not to burn the institution that inconveniences you; is the harder courage, and the one the Republic most requires.
Written by a 26-year Navy veteran, systems engineer, and father of five, this is not a partisan document. It takes no comfort in either camp's certainties, and it does not pretend that the failures of the current moment belong to one party alone. What it does insist; without apology and with the specific stubbornness of someone who has worn the uniform, studied the law, and spent a career watching the distance between the Republic's promise and its practice; is that the argument is still worth making. That the structure is still worth defending. That the choice of what kind of Republic we become is still ours to make.

"The Republic's greatness is measured not only by what it builds, but by what it chooses not to destroy."

This is a book for citizens who are willing to hold an argument without becoming one. For readers who came to understand, not to win. For anyone who has felt, in recent years, the specific grief of watching something they believed in be tested in ways they did not think they would live to see; and who is not yet ready to conclude that the test cannot be passed.

The Founders made their case to a skeptical public in the middle of a genuine constitutional crisis. They were not certain of the outcome. They were confident in the arguments. So is this.
