Impact by Design: Creating Certainty and Impact in a World of Complexity (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9789083738703)

EVERY ORGANISATION CLAIMS IMPACT. ALMOST NONE CAN PROVE IT. YOU CAN DESIGN IT.

Impact has become the most used and least understood word in business, and the gap between what organisations say they change and what they actually change keeps widening.

Berfu Ege Sobe, a leading voice in the impact space, wrote the book that the field has been missing. As a global development and impact advisor and board director, she has watched well-funded programmes and ambitious companies fail to achieve impact while others succeed greatly and make history. The reason is clear and consistent.

Impact lasts only when an action works on four dimensions at once, environment, economy, society, and individual. Sobe calls this the Impact Compass, and Impact by Design turns it into a working method any professional can pick up and use on Monday morning.

The book also settles what impact actually is, a question most leaders get wrong. Outputs are what you produce. Outcomes are what people start to do differently. Impact is the lasting change in real conditions that follows, measured against what would have happened without you.

Inside the book

• How to tell real impact from expensive noise, so you stop investing in work that looks good and changes nothing
• The four-point impact test to run before you commit money, people, or reputation
• Practical building and measurement tools and standards you can use
• How to dissect any lasting change in history and see exactly why it held, then reverse-engineer it for your own work
• Why most corporate and ESG efforts fail to create real impact, and the design choices that keep yours from joining them
• A shared language for impact that works across a startup, a boardroom, a portfolio, and a public agency

Great work is measured by what it leaves behind, even in the most complex contexts. The leaders who understand this stop chasing activities that look good today and start designing impact that lasts for years. Impact by Design gives founders, executives, and investors the framework and the tools to build for the longer horizon, starting the day they finish it.
