"What would you rather be than blind?"
This question, posed by an ophthalmology professor, convinces Alex Kirby he'd rather lose anything other than his sight. The realization leads Alex to become an internationally respected eye surgeon, famous for the development of a revolutionary cataract intraocular lens.
Now Alex has been asked by the State Department to travel to Lithuania. There he will teach a Russian colleague to perform his famous procedure. Ostensibly, the goal is to save the sight of a Russian diplomat. The truth is a bit more complicated.
A tiny, complex piece of cybertechnology will piggyback on Alex's sight-restoring lens and allow the State Department to see what the diplomat sees. Alex has ethical reservations about the act, but he's assured it's vital for the security of the United States.
In Lithuania, amid grim reminders of the Soviet regime's brutal tactics, Alex finds himself caught in an increasingly dangerous game. The ophthalmologist must now answer another life-changing question: Is he willing to sacrifice his life in service for his country? If he's caught, he'll be at the mercy of the Federal Security Service, the successors of the KGB. If he fails, millions of lives could be lost.
Robert E. Kellan, MD, is a board-certified ophthalmologist who graduated from Boston College magna cum laude. He is also a graduate of Tufts Medical School and completed a New York Eye and Ear Infirmary residency program.
Kellan holds several ophthalmology-related patents and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. He is the author of several medical articles and was voted one of Boston Magazine's Top Docs.
