About the Book

In the Midst of Darkness: A Schindler's List Survivor's Story Never Told That Confronts Inherited Trauma

In a synagogue on Yom Kippur Day, 1993 (holiest day of the year in the Jewish religion), as a rabbi's sermon discussed the release of the upcoming film "Schindler's List," Robert Don's life changed forever. After what had been said, his father leaned over to him and mentioned six words that he would never forget: "Your mother was on that list."

In this powerful and deeply moving memoir, In the Midst of Darkness tells the true story of a mother's survival as one of Oskar Schindler's Jews-and the lasting impact her trauma inflicted on her two sons. Through intimate reflection and raw honesty, Robert explores the hidden scars of inherited trauma, revealing how the Holocaust's legacy continued to shape the lives of her children long after liberation.

This unforgettable story goes beyond survival. It examines how:

The pain in generational trauma manifested in hatred as a form of prejudice.

Racism can transform into compassion, awareness, and ultimately, healing.

As Robert confronts his mother's anguish-and the shadow it cast over his own life, and what it did to his brother, he invites readers to look inward at the ways unhealed wounds ripple through generations.

The story brings to the light the truth that we can't change our behavior until we have awareness of it. This is how we begin to heal.

Blending Holocaust history, Jewish identity, and psychological insight, this book resonates with readers seeking to understand the lasting effects of trauma and the human capacity for redemption.

If you were moved by Out From The Shadows by Willie Handler, A Life Inherited by Rena Lipner Katz, and The Choice by Dr. Edith Eger without question what Schindler's List meant, based upon the book by Thomas Keneally, In the Midst of Darkness will leave an indelible mark-a testament to survival, awareness, and the enduring strength of the human spirit.
