When Emmaline visits her grandparents in Gran Rivyè, the birthplace of Jean-Jacques Dessalines, she has no idea that her favorite New Year's soup carries a powerful story. Sitting beside her Granpè, she learns that long ago, enslaved Africans in Haiti were forced to work the land but were denied the foods they grew-especially joumou, the rich pumpkin they cultivated but were never allowed to taste.
Granpè explains how Jan Jak Desalin, along with countless brave men, women, and children, fought against the French, British, and Spanish to win Haiti's freedom on January 1, 1804. But it is Desalin's wife, Mari Klaire Hereuz Felicite Bonere Desalin (Empress Marie-Claire Heureuse), whose compassion and leadership helped shape a tradition still honored today. She prepared the very first Independence Soup using joumou, plantain, potatoes, cabbage, turnips, and fresh herbs foods once forbidden to the enslaved, and encouraged citizens to share the soup for seven days to nourish the newly free nation.
As Emmaline listens, she discovers that Soup Joumou is more than a delicious family recipe. It is a symbol of victory, freedom, resilience, and gratitude for the ancestors who fought for liberty. Inspired by the story, she helps her grandparents harvest vegetables, gather eggs, and prepare the soup with renewed pride and understanding.
Independence Soup Joumou is a heartwarming children's book that blends history, family storytelling, culture, and tradition, perfect for ages 5-12. Children will learn:
why Soup Joumou represents Haiti's independence
how Empress Marie-Claire helped create the tradition
what life was like for enslaved Africans in colonial Haiti
how Haitian families honor ancestors through food
the importance of remembering heroes and heroines of 1804
Ideal for parents, educators, Haitian families, and anyone teaching cultural heritage, this book brings the story of Soup Joumou to life with warmth, accuracy, and pride.
A beautiful addition to New Year celebrations, Black history lessons, and family traditions.
