Industrial Electric Motor Diagnostics: Windings, Bearings, Insulation, Overheating and Load-Related Failures (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798188604561)

An electric motor rarely fails without leaving evidence.

Abnormal heat, rising current, vibration, noise, insulation deterioration, damaged bearings, reduced torque, and repeated protection trips are warning signs. The challenge is not simply to recognize that a motor has failed. The challenge is to determine why it failed-and whether the real cause is inside the motor, in the power supply, in the driven machine, or in the operating process.

Industrial Electric Motor Diagnostics is a practical engineering guide to diagnosing winding, bearing, insulation, overheating, and load-related failures in industrial motors.

This book moves beyond basic motor theory and simple replacement decisions. It shows how to examine symptoms, collect meaningful measurements, compare electrical and mechanical evidence, identify the root cause, and prevent the same failure from damaging the replacement motor.

Inside this book, you will learn how to diagnose:

- Open windings, shorted turns, phase-to-phase faults, ground faults, and winding resistance imbalance
- Insulation deterioration caused by heat, moisture, contamination, vibration, electrical stress, and aging
- Bearing wear, lubrication problems, misalignment, mechanical looseness, shaft damage, and bearing-current effects
- Motors that overheat despite operating below their apparent rated load
- Current imbalance, voltage imbalance, phase loss, incorrect connections, and unstable power supplies
- Excessive starting current, poor acceleration, reduced torque, and motors that stall under load
- Cooling failures, blocked airflow, damaged fans, high ambient temperature, and excessive starting cycles
- Mechanical overloads caused by pumps, fans, conveyors, gearboxes, brakes, and seized machine components
- Vibration and noise patterns linked to electrical, magnetic, bearing, alignment, and load problems
- Failures that appear only after warm-up, at full speed, during acceleration, or under specific production conditions

The diagnostic approach combines:

Visual and mechanical inspection
Voltage and current measurements
Winding resistance comparison
Insulation testing
Temperature and thermal-pattern analysis
Bearing and vibration evidence
Motor connection verification
Load and process evaluation
Root-cause confirmation
Post-repair testing and failure prevention

Realistic machine-failure cases demonstrate how similar symptoms can have completely different causes. A hot motor may be overloaded, incorrectly connected, poorly cooled, electrically unbalanced, repeatedly started, mechanically restricted, or supplied by unsuitable operating conditions. Replacing the motor without proving the cause can result in another expensive failure.

Each diagnostic case follows the evidence from the first symptom to the final conclusion. The book explains what was observed, what was measured, which assumptions were misleading, how the root cause was confirmed, what corrective action was taken, and how the repair was verified.

Written for industrial electricians, maintenance technicians, automation engineers, service engineers, machine builders, commissioning specialists, and reliability professionals, this book is designed for practical use in factories, workshops, utilities, and field-service environments.

Whether you are investigating burned windings, repeated bearing damage, insulation breakdown, overheating, current imbalance, vibration, poor acceleration, loss of torque, or unexplained motor trips, this book provides a systematic path from symptom to measurement, from measurement to root cause, and from root cause to a reliable repair.

Do not replace a failed motor until you understand what destroyed it.

Diagnose the motor, the supply, the load, and the complete machine system.
