The use of sensors and instrumentation for measuring and control is growing at a very rapid rate in all facets of life in today's world. This book emphasizes the use of simplified electrical circuits to convert the change in the measured physical variable into a voltage output signal. In each chapter, relevant sensors and their operation are presented and discussed at a fundamental level and are integrated with the essential mathematical theory in a simplified form. The book is richly illustrated with colored figures and images. End-of-chapter examples and problems complement the text in a simple and straight forward manner.

Issam Abu-Mahfouz, Ph.D., P.E. is an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and program chair in the Mechanical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering Technology, School of Science, Engineering and Technology, at Penn State University Harrisburg, where he has been working since 1999. He received his Bachelor of Science and Master's degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Kuwait University in 1985 and 1989, respectively, and his Doctorate degree in Mechanical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University in 1993. He has taught courses in computer aided design (CAD), finite element analysis (FEA), capstone design, automatic controls, mechatronics, instrumentation, fluid power, design for manufacturability, dynamics, vibrations, optimization, and smart systems. Before joining Penn State, Dr. AbuMahfouz served in the industry as a project engineer (design and manufacture of heavy trenching machines) and as an R&D engineer (metal drilling). He provides engineering consulting and research services for the industry in the design and development of new products. His research interests include manufacturing process and machine condition monitoring, machinery noise and vibration, and the application of artificial intelligence techniques.
