Iron Cross, Star of David: The Reichsbund Jüdischer Frontsoldaten and the German-Jewish Veterans Who Fought Nazi Propaganda (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798235561373)

Would you rely on your war medals to protect your family from a rising dictatorship?

In the turbulent streets of the Weimar Republic, 50,000 decorated German-Jewish veterans of the First World War made a bold, fateful choice. Faced with a tidal wave of Nazi propaganda claiming Jews had "stabbed Germany in the back," these men did not cower. They organized. Under the banner of the Reichsbund jüdischer Frontsoldaten (RjF), captains, infantrymen, and artillery officers who had bled at the Somme and Verdun mobilized to fight for their honor, their patriotism, and their rights as citizens.

Iron Cross, Star of David by Winston Maddox takes you far beyond standard historical summaries, immersing you in the raw, high-stakes reality of veterans who believed facts could defeat hatred. Armed with statistical census data, casualty lists, and published memoirs, the RjF waged a relentless campaign against Nazi revisionism. They marched in uniform, lobbied the highest offices of state, and published Gefallene deutsche Juden-a monumental roll call of the 12,000 Jewish soldiers who died for Imperial Germany. For years, their war records stood as an impenetrable shield, earning them exemptions directly supported by Reich President Paul von Hindenburg.

For the seasoned history reader who demands depth, primary evidence, and visceral narrative detail, this book delivers an unsparing look at the mechanics of Weimar politics and propaganda. You will sit in the tense strategy meetings of RjF founder Captain Leo Löwenstein; you will witness the clashes between decorated veterans and SA brownshirts; and you will experience the devastating shift when totalitarian doctrine rendered military service meaningless. It is a story of brotherhood, military pride, and tactical resistance carried out by men who refused to be written out of the nation they fought to defend.

Maddox crafts a masterclass in historical tension, dissecting the fatal flaw in the veterans' strategy: their unwavering faith that demonstrated patriotism and assimilation would guarantee their safety. As Hitler consolidated power, the very state these men bled for stripped them of their medals, outlawed their organization, and targeted them despite their Iron Crosses. This is not merely a chronicle of political collapse-it is a haunting exploration of human loyalty pushed to its absolute limits.

Can loyalty to a nation survive when that nation turns its back on you? Iron Cross, Star of David is available now in paperback at bookstores everywhere. Step into the boots of the men who stood at the intersection of honor and tragedy, and discover the forgotten front line of the German-Jewish experience.
