When not helping my dad train our beautiful horses, my head was buried in books about kids my age. I relished every story of a young person's adventures, struggles and conquests. My heroines' victories ultimately led me to my own. Growing up in a family of very modest means, I joined the military to not only serve my country, but to gain access to the education I knew was, undoubtably, my only way of influencing young minds, like mine had been influenced all those years ago.
