It Was Never Your Job (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798224454983)

You were the one they called when things fell apart.

You were the mediator between your parents. The translator of your mother's moods. The second parent to your siblings. The one who learned to read a room before you learned to read a book.

They called you mature. Responsible. The easy one.

No one asked if you were okay. Because you were always okay. You had to be.

If this sounds like your childhood, this book was written for you.

It Was Never Your Job is the first book to address the full experience of growing up as your family's emotional backbone - whether you were the parentified child, the eldest daughter, the family peacekeeper, or simply the one who never got to be a kid. Drawing from psychology, real stories, and practical recovery strategies, Daniel Mercer walks you through:

• Why you became the "strong one" and what it cost you
• How your childhood role is still running your adult relationships, career, and sense of self
• The specific patterns that keep you trapped: hypervigilance, people-pleasing, the inability to receive help, the exhaustion that rest cannot fix
• A concrete, step-by-step path to putting down the weight you were never supposed to carry

This is not a book that tells you what is wrong with you. This is a book that tells you what happened to you - and shows you how to build a life where your worth is not measured by how much you carry for others.

For every adult who was never allowed to be a child. It was never your job.
