Itinerary and Temples of Sri-Govinda Devaji (from Vrindavan to Jaipur, C.1534-1727): Study of the Metamorphosis of the Hindu Temple and the Deity duri (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798648518773)

I, along with my son Ajay, actually travelled by the road, following exactly the same route on which Sri-Govinda Devaji had travelled (and visited the places where the Deity had stayed) i.e. from Vrindaban to Radha-Kund (1669-1671), to Kaman (1671-1675), to Govindgadh (1675-1700), to Rajgadh, to Khawa (Jamwa-Ramgadh) (1700-1707), to Govindpura (Rūpāheḍā) (1707-1713), to Kanak-Vrindaban (Amer-Jaipur) (1713-1715), and finally, to the present site Surya Mahal (Jai-Niwas Garden) Jaipur (1727), in three days' time (with journey breaks). SGD's temples were established wherever the Deity had stayed: these were studied, and their rough plans were made. A work of more than 100 pages, with a map of the itinerary, ground plans of these temples and the relevant archival documents, was prepared. Its most important feature is that it also studies, simultaneously, the metamorphosis of the Hindu Temple and the Deity, from the classical to folk, in the Braja region, under the influence of BHAKTI and the circumstances of the medieval period. The temple, for example, developed from the Sāstrīya (textual) śikhara type to the havelī 'Mandira' type and, finally, to the 'Bārahdarī' type, reflecting its simplification when its 'formalism' was entirely dropped and it became an incarnation of 'Bhakti' (devotional worship), and as simple as that ! This movement transformed the Hindu psyche: society, religion and architecture, and soon engulfed the whole of India. It permeated the life of the people at large. That the Kachhwahas of Amer-Jaipur, from Raja Bharmal (1547-1573 A.D.) to Sawai Raja Jaisingh-II (1699-1743 A.D.) played an extremely important role in this temple movement, patronized the deity's flight and supported Him on the way, and finally enshrined Him in front of their Palace and dedicated their Capital and their State to Him, shows perhaps the most subtle aspect of this movement which has been highlighted in this work for the first time. Of course, they did it in the larger interest of the 'Dharma', and this study will help us to identify the principal stalwarts of Medieval Indian Renaissance and Reformation, as also the main trends and currents of the movement.
