Raised as a farm boy, Dean is from the Appalachian country of southeast Ohio. He graduated from high school, then was drafted into the army, serving in the Korean War. Upon returning home, Dean married his lifelong companion Freeda, and together they raised four children, two girls and two boys. Always committed to Christian ideals and service, they established and directed Friends Disaster Service, as a service arm of the Evangelical Friends Church (Quakers.) This organization assisted victims of natural disasters who were unable to help themselves. After Freeda's death in 2008 Dean has kept busy authoring the book It's About Restoration; his other interests include: restoring a vintage 1948 International truck, and woodworking.
