It's (not) shite being Scottish (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798840531020)

This is a special kind of love, impossible to describe, of a land seeped so deeply in beauty and tragedy that to touch this, to glimpse it, even know of its existence is to understand viscerally exactly why it is shite being Scottish and to feel the intolerable pain of history. It is soaked into the denatured landscape, useful only to the privileged to consummate their bloodlust, to preserve outdated values of custodianship, and to sustain British state power; while a few responsible institutions and stalwart souls with visions of something else, tinker at the edges with regenerations and ecological projects of one sort of another, which they hope one day will create more natural habitats and a greater diversity of life. The rest of us meanwhile see grid references at the summits of mountains and routes towards these from places where we can park our cars, from which we cannot but avoid expanding our consciousness and through which we can begin to understand that values of simplicity, silence and slow contemplation are more important than arguing about what happened in the past.
