Mary Margolies DeForest (PhD, classics) lives with her husband and their imperious cat.
A child of the sixties, Dr. DeForest felt an affinity for the protest poets of ancient Rome. Refusing to praise the great men of their day, these poets found inspiration in Apollonius, a poet and scholar of Alexandria's famous Library. When DeForest was turning her dissertation on Apollonius into a book, Robert Kellogg (co-author of The Nature of Narrative ) wrote her a letter that gave her an aerial view of the refusal theme crossing the boundaries of time, space, and language. Then, as if through a telescope, Jane Austen appeared.
