Japa: THE PRICE OF LEAVING: -A Memoir of Dreams, Exile & Survival (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798275018097)

This is not just my story. It is the story of many - dressed in my skin, carried in my scars, spoken through my voice. When I left Nigeria, I did not leave as a man escaping poverty or failure. I was already established - a consultant psychiatrist, a teacher, a leader, a father. I had three cars, a driver, a house, a clinic, and a respected name. By all standards, I was "stable."And yet, I left. Why? Because like so many others, I believed there was more. More opportunities. More stability for my children. More recognition for my work. I believed that across the Atlantic, in a land painted in glossy brochures and social media posts, there was a greener pasture. But when I landed in Canada, reality stripped me bare. What I met was not Eldorado but exile. Loneliness that gnawed at the soul. Bills that mocked my savings. Night shifts that bent my back. Tears shed in silence. Hundreds of job applications sent into the void. And the bitter discovery that success in one land does not automatically translate to another. This book was born out of that paradox - the dream and the disillusionment, the breaking and the rebuilding.I wrote it for the dreamers who whisper the word "japa" in hushed tones, thinking escape is always the answer. I wrote it for those who have already crossed oceans and now sit in silent rooms, wondering if they made a mistake. I wrote it for the children of migrants who need to understand the price their parents quietly paid.Above all, I wrote it for myself - to make sense of my own journey, to turn my scars into scripture, and to ensure that my silence is never mistaken for consent. If you take nothing else from this book, take this: dreams do come true, but never without cost. Migration will test you, strip you, break you, and remake you. It will demand everything you thought you had, and then more. But if you endure, if you rise from the ashes, you will discover a version of yourself you never knew existed.Let no one deceive you: dreams have a price. Migration is not just about flights and visas. It is about scars. It is about losing yourself and learning yourself all over again. It is about nights of tears and mornings of resilience. It is about bills, loneliness, systemic walls, and unappreciated sacrifice. It is about dying many small deaths until you rise into a larger life. But if you endure - if you refuse to let the breaking be your end - you will discover that even in the harshest exile, you can bloom again.I stand today as proof. Not unscarred, but unbroken. Not unchanged, but reborn. And so, to every reader, every dreamer, every future migrant: If you are stable back home, weigh your options carefully. If you must go, go with open eyes and a prepared heart. If you are already abroad, and the nights are heavy - know this: you are not alone.Dreams do come true. But they come at a cost. This is my truth.May it prepare you, warn you, strengthen you, or remind you that you are not alone. This is my story. May it give you the courage to write yours.
