Jazz Guitar Comping: Creating Direction Through Harmony, Rhythm, and the Expectation Framework (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798190237719)

You have five hundred chords under your fingers. Which one does the music need right now?

Jazz accompaniment is often taught as an inventory problem: learn these voicings, then those, then the inversions, the extensions, the altered dominants, and the substitutions. The predictable result is a guitarist with an enormous harmonic vocabulary but no musical grammar-someone who can play twenty perfectly correct chords in a single measure, when only one truly serves the music.

This book is about that grammar.

Rather than asking "What chord can I play here?", it asks a far more powerful question:

What do I want the listener to expect next?

From that single question emerges every musical decision. Voice leading, rhythm, harmonic substitutions, density, silence, interaction with the soloist, and even the choice not to play become tools for shaping expectation rather than displaying vocabulary.

Through the principles of the Expectation Framework, comping is revealed not as the art of choosing chords, but as the art of directing perception. Every voicing carries a purpose. Every rhythm influences anticipation. Every substitution reshapes the listener's sense of direction. The accompanist becomes a storyteller, guiding tension, stability, momentum, and release with intention.

This book provides a complete framework for developing that mindset, helping you transform harmony into conversation and accompaniment into musical narrative.
