Jesuit Relations of Canada (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781026066287)

"Jesuit Relations of Canada" serves as a comprehensive and scholarly guide to one of the most significant collections of primary source material regarding the early history of North America. This work provides a meticulous bibliography and overview of the annual reports sent by Jesuit missionaries in New France to their superiors in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries. These reports, known as the "Relations," offer an unparalleled perspective on the initial encounters between European missionaries and the Indigenous peoples of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence regions.

The volume details the ethnographic, geographic, and linguistic observations recorded by the Jesuits, which remain foundational for understanding the social and political development of early Canada and the northeastern United States. By documenting these historical records, the work provides researchers and historians with a clear roadmap through a complex and vital corpus of documentation. This book is an indispensable resource for those interested in the religious, social, and colonial dynamics of the French enterprise in the New World, emphasizing the historical value of the Jesuit accounts as both missionary reports and early colonial chronicles.
