Jonah (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781025761510)

"Jonah" is a masterfully crafted retelling of the biblical story of the reluctant prophet, viewed through the lens of Robert Nathan's characteristic irony and poetic sensitivity. In this novel, the ancient narrative is infused with modern psychological depth, transforming the familiar tale of the man who fled from divine instruction into a poignant exploration of human pride, loneliness, and the struggle for spiritual understanding.

Set against the backdrop of ancient Israel and the sprawling city of Nineveh, the story follows Jonah as he attempts to escape his mandate. Nathan moves beyond the purely miraculous elements of the storm and the great fish to focus on Jonah's inner life-his personal frustrations, his romantic yearnings, and his eventual confrontation with the overwhelming nature of mercy. The prose is elegant and understated, stripping away the grandiosity of myth to reveal a deeply relatable man caught between his own stubborn desires and a cosmic calling.

A notable example of early 20th-century biblical fiction, "Jonah" showcases the author's unique ability to blend gentle satire with profound philosophical inquiry. The work remains a compelling study of the tension between individual will and the inescapable presence of the infinite, offering readers a timeless reflection on faith, failure, and the human condition.
