The author adroitly chronicles the experiences of four hopeful immigrants and the expectations of their parents and friends in Sierra Leone, folks whose dreams are much bigger than their children can fulfill. Conteh skillfully presents the disappointments, the heartaches and the deceptions the immigrants both perpetrate and experience. The book is a must read especially for those in the authors' country and elsewhere who believe in a dreamland outside their country.

J. Sorie Conteh was born in Sierra Leone. He received a B.A. from the University of Rochester, NY, and a Ph.D. in Anthropology and African Studies from Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana. He was a Research Fellow at The Institute of African Studies at Fourah Bay College, The University of Sierra Leone and at The Afrika-Studiecentrum in Leiden, The Netherlands. He was a Political Affairs Officer at the Permanent Observer Mission of The African Union to The United Nations in New York. Dr. Conteh was later Political Affairs Officer at the United Nations Mission in Iraq and Kuwait, and also at The United Nations Mission in Eriteria and Ethiopia. Dr. Conteh is the author of three novels: The Diamonds, In Search of Sons, and Family Affairs. He has published several short stories and articles on the effects of diamond mining in Sierra Leone, female circumcision, secret societies, African culture, and democracy in Africa.
