Justification of the Good: Moral Philosophy (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798246681237)

Justification of the Good is Vladimir Solovyov's most important and systematic work of moral philosophy, presenting a sustained inquiry into the nature of ethical truth, moral obligation, and the objective reality of the good. Written in the final years of the nineteenth century, the book represents Solovyov's mature philosophical vision and stands as a cornerstone of Russian religious and ethical thought.

Solovyov rejects moral relativism, utilitarianism, and purely sociological accounts of ethics, arguing instead that the good is not a subjective preference or historical convention, but a real and binding principle grounded in being itself. He examines conscience, freedom, love, responsibility, and moral action, insisting that ethics cannot be separated from truth without dissolving into coercion or arbitrariness.

Throughout the work, Solovyov engages critically with modern moral theories, including rationalism, positivism, and evolutionary ethics. Against these systems, he affirms the dignity of the human person and the universal significance of moral responsibility. Moral action, he argues, is inseparable from the destiny of humanity as a whole and cannot be reduced to social utility, political order, or biological development.

While deeply informed by Christian thought, Justification of the Good is not a devotional work. It is a philosophical treatment of ethics that addresses fundamental questions shared by believers and non-believers alike: the meaning of good and evil, the foundations of moral obligation, and the possibility of objective moral truth in modern civilization. Solovyov's thought stands at the intersection of philosophy, theology, and cultural critique, offering a vision of ethics rooted in freedom rather than force.

This translation presents Solovyov's moral philosophy in clear, faithful English, preserving the rigor and seriousness of the original. Justification of the Good remains essential reading for those interested in moral philosophy, ethics, Russian religious thought, and the philosophical foundations of goodness.
