Laura Riddell was born Laura Taylor on April 2, 1920, on the eastern Caribbean British island of Montserrat. Renowned for its fertile land from a local volcano, Ms. Riddell grew up along lush greenery, sugar fields, and black sand beaches with eleven siblings, until the call of city life took her to New York in 1951. There, she met her husband, Osborne Riddell, and raised her four children until following her daughter to Austin, Texas in 1981. A dedicated community activist and devoted grandmother, Ms. Ridell proves that art can inspire at any age. Since the volcanic eruption that covered two-thirds of Montserrat in ash in 1995, Ms. Riddell has returned to visit her beloved homeland, and hopes future generations can enjoy the beauty of her island paradise.
