An ethereal world in paper, ink and color. Kawanabe Kyosai's incredible drawings evoke a Japan of a different era.
Unlike the earlier Kano School, Kawanabe Kyosai's art was widely printed in woodblock and then painted. Collected here by Japanese Art historian Andrew Livingston, Drawing for fun is a reflection of the natural forces mirrored in our lives. Kyosai found joy in many scenes of nature.
Drawings for Fun was a two-part block-print art book created by Kyosai in 1881. This edition is the same aspect ratio, recreated from facsimiles of the original with an added forward and table of contents. While the manufacturing, type of paper, and inks may not reflect the traditional processes of Kawanabe's workshop, the essence of Kyosai's style and personality shine through no less powerfully. This color paperback is Volume I in a two-part series published by Kyosai. Volume II and a combined edition are also available.
