Knife Edge: When Everything Depends on One Thing. Using ISO 9001:2026 (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781918825060)

When you pride yourself on product quality and your customers stop telling you there's a problem - they just stop coming back - something has already gone wrong that your quality management system isn't showing you.

Jason McLean knew that feeling was coming. He just didn't know it had already arrived.

Jason built Hardhack on a promise made in his father's garage - that the blade in a professional's hand won't fail when everything depends on it. Twelve years ago, he wrote a quality policy and put it on the wall. The promise wasn't in it. And somewhere between the Armoury and the boardroom, Jason stopped going to the floor.

On a November morning on the eastern face of Kinder Scout, a retired paramedic reaches for a blade he has trusted for eleven years. It slows. The handle shifts. Robert Ashworth reaches for the backup. The climber comes down. Nobody dies.

Nobody, yet, is asking why.

By Friday evening, five words on a mountain rescue forum have reached a journalist in Manchester. By Tuesday morning, the story has reached someone Jason McLean has not seen for eleven years.

Sara arrives unannounced. She always does.

What Sara finds at Hardhack is not a failing business. Revenue is fine. The audits pass. The 1% return rate is, as Jason always says, within acceptable parameters. What she finds is something harder to name and harder to fix: a quality management system that describes an organisation as it was, not as it is - objectives written for a product that has evolved, a scope that no longer reflects the market, an interested party map that has never been updated, and a founder who has spent a decade building a brand loud enough that nobody, including him, has noticed the silence on the production floor.

Knife Edge teaches ISO 9001:2026 through the story of what happens when a great organisation stops examining itself - not through dishonesty, not through negligence, but through the quiet, incremental, well-intentioned drift that every leader recognises and nobody talks about.

Through Jason's journey - and Sara's forensic, unhurried dismantling of everything Hardhack thinks it knows about its own quality - readers encounter the full architecture of ISO 9001:2026 in practice: context and interested parties, quality policy and objectives, risk-based thinking, operational planning and control, customer focus, performance evaluation, and the discipline of continual improvement that separates certification from capability.

This is not a textbook. The standard is never quoted. It is lived - in the decisions Jason deferred, the conversations Dave English stopped having, the spreadsheet Billy Brown kept updating because nobody changed what it was measuring.

If your quality system is telling you everything is fine, Knife Edge is the question you should be asking next.
