Eduard Cuypers (1859-1927) was one of the most celebrated architects in the Netherlands in the 1890s. Known for much of the development of the time throughout Indonesia, yet working from Amsterdam, Cuypers and his firm designed numerous projects in collaboration with Marius Hulswit (1862-1921) and Arthur Fermont (1882-1967). Their buildings are landmarks in architectural styles that vary from classic to expressive and from art deco to decorative. Many of these buildings are still standing in cities such as Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, Medan, Padang, Semarang, Surakarta, Yogyakarta, and Malang. Landmarks from a Bygone Era presents a fascinating story about these buildings and the people behind them.
