Latest Research in Plant Meiosis (Hardcover) (ISBN-13: 9781639878987)

Meiosis in plants is a crucial process that facilitates genetic variation and reproductive diversity. Like in animals, meiosis in plants occurs in specialized cells called germ cells, which give rise to gametes - pollen grains in male plants and ovules in female plants. The process of meiosis involves two consecutive divisions: meiosis I and meiosis II. Meiosis I separates homologous chromosomes, reducing the chromosome number by half, while meiosis II separates sister chromatids, resulting in the formation of haploid gametes. In plants, meiosis plays a vital role in sexual reproduction, ensuring genetic diversity in offspring. During meiosis, genetic recombination occurs through the process of crossing over, where genetic material is exchanged between homologous chromosomes. This shuffling of genetic information contributes to the variability observed in plant populations. Meiosis in plants involves unique structures and adaptations. For example, in angiosperms, meiosis occurs within the anthers and ovaries of flowers, facilitating the formation of pollen grains and ovules, respectively. This book unravels the recent studies in the field of plant meiosis. It will also provide interesting topics for research which interested readers can take up. The book aims to serve as a resource guide for students and experts alike and contribute to the growth of the discipline.
