Layamon's Brut: Selections (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781025784922)

"Layamon's Brut" is a monumental epic poem that serves as a cornerstone of Middle English literature, bridging the gap between Old English alliterative traditions and the developing literary styles of the thirteenth century. These selections offer a compelling glimpse into one of the earliest vernacular histories of Britain, tracing the island's legendary origins from the fall of Troy to the era of the Saxon invasions. At the heart of the narrative is the legendary figure of King Arthur, whose exploits and court are depicted with a vivid, heroic intensity that helped establish the foundations of Arthurian romance in the English language.

Written by a priest named Layamon, the work is notable for its unique linguistic character, blending traditional Germanic poetic forms with the evolving Middle English idiom. This collection highlights key passages that illustrate the poem's dramatic power, its focus on kingship and national identity, and its preservation of ancient folklore. By providing a window into the cultural and historical consciousness of medieval England, "Layamon's Brut" remains an essential text for understanding the evolution of English storytelling and the enduring allure of the Arthurian mythos.
