Leading Academic Language: Coaching Vocabulary, Clarity, and Comprehension at Scale (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798991725323)

Academic language is not an add-on to instruction. It is how students access learning. In many classrooms, students are actively completing tasks, participating in lessons, and following directions. Yet when asked to explain their thinking, many struggle to articulate what they know and why. The gap is not effort, it is language. In Leading Academic Language, Dr. Woods challenges school leaders to rethink how academic language functions in everyday instruction. Rather than treating vocabulary and explanation as separate initiatives, this book positions academic language as the foundation of Tier 1 teaching and learning. Drawing from real classroom experiences and leadership practice, Dr. Woods provides practical guidance for principals and instructional leaders to:
- Recognize academic language during walkthroughs
- Talk with students to uncover deeper learning
- Coach teachers without overwhelming them
- Provide feedback that leads to real instructional change
- Build coherent systems that strengthen Tier 1 instruction
Through clear examples, leadership reflections, and implementation tools, this book helps leaders move beyond compliance-driven initiatives toward instructional clarity that improves student understanding. When students can explain their thinking, learning becomes visible. When leaders prioritize academic language, instruction becomes stronger.
