Learning in the Outdoors (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798251875928)

This book is for anyone who works with young people and wants to use the land as a co-teacher, including classroom teachers, scout leaders, camp counselors, forest school educators, after-school staff, and parent volunteers.
Part I explores why outdoor learning works: how children learn through experience, how development unfolds differently at different ages, and how outdoor settings create natural inclusion for diverse learners. Part II covers essential skills such as clothing and gear, shelter and site selection, fire, cooking, tools and knots, navigation, and what to do when things go wrong. Part III addresses the legacy we leave: storytelling, place-based learning, and building programs that last.
Each chapter blends practical instruction with developmental insight and teaching strategies. The goal is not to turn you into a survival expert, but to give you the foundation to teach confidently in outdoor settings, whether that's a backcountry expedition or a schoolyard ten steps from the door.
