Level the Field: The No-Nonsense AI Playbook for SMBs (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798997726911)

The AI hype machine has a clear target: small business owners who don't have the time, budget, or technical background to separate useful tools from expensive distractions. Level the Field was written specifically for them. James Cooper, founder of C2A Digital, has spent years working with SMB owners navigating the gap between what AI vendors promise and what AI tools actually deliver. His conclusion: most small business owners aren't getting straight answers from anyone with something to sell. This book is the straight answer.

Level the Field takes a deliberately vendor-neutral approach. It doesn't recommend specific tools or platforms. Instead, it gives SMB owners durable evaluation frameworks for assessing any AI tool from any vendor at any point in the technology's evolution. The question it consistently returns to isn't "Is this impressive?" -- it's "Does it reduce my expenses or increase my revenue?"

The book covers the full decision cycle: what AI actually is and isn't; how to identify genuine AI capability versus marketing-speak; how to assess data readiness before committing to any implementation; the legal and liability risks most vendors won't raise voluntarily; a step-by-step implementation playbook; and a six-month action plan that moves from evaluation to deployment.

Ethics aren't treated as a separate topic or a footnote. The author's position is clear: when you deploy an AI tool, you are importing the values of the people who built it. This conviction runs through the book.

Level the Field is not a technical manual; it doesn't explain how large language models work, go deep into the history of artificial intelligence, or predict where the technology is heading. It is a practical business guide for owners who need to make real decisions now with limited budgets and time, and have no interest in being sold to.

For the first time in the modern commercial era, a five-person firm can access capabilities that previously required enterprise-level resources. Level the Field shows SMB owners how to capture that opportunity -- carefully, and on their own terms.
