Light from a Dark Room: Ibn al-Haytham, the Birth of the Scientific Mind, and What a Prisoner Taught the World to See (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798258030450)

What could you still make, in the room you did not choose?

You know the room. A year of illness. A parent who needs you now. A marriage that ended and took the house with it. A job that closed like a door. Something arrived and rearranged your life without asking, and most of what you meant to do with yourself is currently unavailable.

In the year 1011, a mathematician named Ibn al-Haytham made a catastrophic mistake. He told the Caliph of Egypt he could control the flooding of the Nile. Standing on the granite at Aswan with the river going past him, he understood that no one on earth could do it - and that he now had to go back and say so to a ruler who executed men for less.

To survive, he pretended to lose his mind. It worked. They took his books, his instruments, and his freedom, and locked him in a house in Cairo for ten years.

He had a wall, a shutter, and the sun.

Light from a Dark Room is the true story of what he did with them. It is narrative history written as a story rather than a lecture - the boy in the Basra bazaar, the terrifying caliph, the river that would not be argued with, and the decade of silence that produced the most important book on light ever written.

• Watch a man overturn thirteen centuries of accepted science with a bowl of water and two candles
• Understand, finally and clearly, why your eye is a camera and your seeing happens behind it
• Follow the thousand-year line from a hole in a shutter in Cairo to the photograph on your phone
• Meet al-Hakim, one of history's strangest rulers, and the court where telling the truth could kill you
• Find out what actually survives when everything else has been taken away

This is a book for anyone who has ever been shut in somewhere and wondered what they might still be capable of inside it.

He worked for ten years, alone, believing it would probably come to nothing. It became the way we see.
