Bredette C. Murray was a remarkable journalist who arrived in Texas at the age of 22 and operated a newspaper in Mesilla, Arizona, before the Civil War. After serving in a Confederate cavalry unit there, he moved to San Antonio and Austin, where he helped to found what became the Austin American-Statesman. In 1872, with his friend Lewis S. Owings, first governor of the Arizona Territory, Murray moved to the new town of Denison, Texas. He published newspapers there for the next 40 years. EDITOR Mavis Anne Bryant is an author and clinical psychologist who grew up in Denison, Texas. She served as acquiring editor in American history for the University of Tennessee Press.
