Love and Justice in the Book of Isaiah (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798233143441)

The Book of Isaiah stands as one of the most theologically rich and literarily complex works in the Hebrew Bible, a text whose influence has extended far beyond its ancient origins into the liturgies, ethics, and imaginations of Jewish and Christian communities across millennia. At its heart lies a profound wrestling with two divine attributes that, in many modern conceptions, appear to stand in tension: love and justice. Yet Isaiah refuses to treat these as competing forces. Instead, it presents them as mutually interpreting dimensions of God's character and activity in the world. The prophetic voice that echoes through its sixty-six chapters insists that divine love is not sentimental indulgence, nor is divine justice cold retribution. Rather, both are expressions of a single, holy commitment to the flourishing of creation and the restoration of a people who repeatedly fall short of their covenantal calling.

This book seeks to trace that vision with particular attention to how Isaiah articulates the relationship between divine love and divine justice. These themes are not merely abstract concepts but are embedded in the lived realities of ancient Judah. When Isaiah condemns the exploitation of the poor, the corruption of leaders, or the idolatry of the people, he does so not as a detached moralist but as a messenger of a God whose love refuses to tolerate injustice. When he announces judgment-whether against Judah, its neighbors, or the great empires of the ancient Near East-he frames it as the necessary consequence of a world that has turned away from the divine order. And when he proclaims comfort, restoration, and hope, he does so with the conviction that God's love is ultimately stronger than human failure.
