Along the way he fought intrigue, sabotage, and mutiny including from the Spanish officials originally charged with backing him. In the end, Magellan crossed the Pacific to reach the Visayan Islands (modern-day Philippines), there providing empirical evidence that the world was round and could be circled. And after Magellan's death at Mactan, a handful of his unlikely crew decided to continue eastward to complete what became the first fully recorded circuit of the globe.
