Making of a Physician: How the 1970s Shaped a Generation of Doctors (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798996610907)

During the 1970s, young physicians learned medicine in a world of autonomy, responsibility, and uncertainty. Resident-driven hospital teams often made life-and-death decisions with limited supervision and few of the technological resources available today.

In Making of a Physician, John E. Heffner, MD recounts his journey through that formative era, when bedside observation and clinical judgment often preceded advanced imaging, electronic records, and evidence-based guidelines. Through vivid stories of patients, mentors, therapeutic successes, and occasional missteps, he explores how physicians learned not only the science of medicine but also its craft.

Blending memoir with the history of medical training and thoughtful reflection on professional development, this book examines what it meant to become a physician in an earlier generation-and what essential lessons from that experience remain relevant today. A story of mentorship, craftsmanship, and lifelong learning, Making of a Physician explores how doctors are shaped by their teachers, colleagues, patients, and families.
