Numerous Autistic people pass for neurotypical for every autistic person you see who is visible. To conform to societal norms, masking is a common coping strategy used by autistic people. In doing so, they adopt a phony persona at the expense of their mental health. To avoid being perceived as needy or "strange," they may repress harmless stims, mask communication difficulties by being modest and mild-mannered, or put themselves in situations that make them extremely anxious.
This book discusses: celebrating exceptional interests; cultivating relationships with autistic people; challenging preconceptions about autistic people; and rediscovering your beliefs.
To eliminate the necessity for masking among autistic persons, it is important to respect their needs, individuality, and special strengths.
