Earth is silent. His wife and son never came. A cult has cut off Mars. Robert Austin may have to sacrifice everything to find out what happened.
Humanity's first colony on Mars was supposed to be a beginning. Robert helped build it. The life support, the infrastructure, the systems that keep the only humans alive on a planet that would kill them in minutes. He just doesn't remember any of it.
After an accident robs him of twenty years, Robert finds himself the most trusted man in a colony full of questions.
And people are alive, and dead because of decisions he can't remember making.
Survivors fractured by greed, power, and deceptive AI still depend on his leadership. Robert pulls at threads that some would rather he leave alone. Some decisions he's not sure he wants to remember.
But one thought won't let him go. Is Mars all that's left?
The colony split seventeen years ago. Aaron Hoffman and his AI simulation convinced a third of the colonists from the first two ships that everything they know is a lie. Earth was not their true home, and the Quadrians, an alien race native to Mars, were preparing them to become part of a new society.
Robert sees the truth, but Hoffman cut off his only link to Earth, the Mars Orbital Satellite Array (MOSA), and Robert's only way to prove the lie.
The last messages Mars received were rumors of war building back on Earth. Then Earth went silent. Robert's wife, Kim, and his son, Billy, were supposed to arrive on the third colony ship, the Collins. It never arrived.
The Quadrians have built their own colony, grown their own crops, and raised their children on Hoffman's stories.
The two sides have lived apart for years. That is about to end with an unlikely alliance.
Robert is the only one determined to reconnect with Earth, and the gaps in his memory are about to decide who survives.
A literary science fiction novel about memory, survival, and what humanity becomes when there is nowhere left to run.
